You should have the title to your car if your car has been paid off. It’s important to have possession of your car’s title, as it shows you are the legal owner of the vehicle. If you do not have your car’s title, you can’t sell or even give away your car.
Clearly, it’s important to know exactly where that car title is. If you have lost it, or it has been destroyed, you need a replacement, and you need it fast! By the way, a replacement title is also called a duplicate title. So do you get a duplicate title exactly?
You can get a duplicate car title at your local DMV office. (That’s Department of Motor Vehicles, for those of you lucky enough to not recognize the acronym. You can do this in person, by mail, or online.
If you choose to visit the DMV in person, you will need to fill out the application for a duplicate title. (This is also lovingly known as form 82101.) Be sure to take along proof of identities, such as a driver’s license or another ID card. You will also need to fill out an odometer disclosure form, which states the mileage on your car at that time. There are duplicate title fees that must also be paid. Plan at least a long wait in line, though it’d be smart to call ahead to confirm operating hours at this time.
If you are choosing the online route, visit the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles website, and search for “Tags and Titles”. Once you locate that, you’ll see a drop-down for “Lost Title or Replacement Title”. They provide a step-by-step process for you to follow. Again, there will be fees to pay, and you’ll need a valid ID too.
If snail-mail is your cup of tea, download and complete form 8101, and mail it to the office of the local tax collector. Be sure to provide your current mailing address. This will help avoid the title becoming lost in the mail.
Keep a close eye on that duplicate title once you receive it. You don’t want to become a repeat offender with the DMV.
