Getting Your Motorcycle Title and Registration in Florida

If you're a motorcycle owner in Florida, it's important to make sure your vehicle is properly registered and titled. This not only keeps you in compliance with state laws, but it also protects your investment and makes it easier to sell your motorcycle in the future. Here's a guide to getting your motorcycle title and registration in Florida.

Step 1: Obtain Proof of Ownership

Before you can register your motorcycle in Florida, you need to show proof of ownership. This is typically done by providing a title or bill of sale. If you purchased your motorcycle from a dealer, they should have provided you with the necessary paperwork. If you bought the bike from a private seller, you'll need to obtain a signed bill of sale that includes the vehicle identification number (VIN) and purchase price.

If you don't have a title or bill of sale, you may need to go through a bonding process to obtain a title. This can be a lengthy and complicated process, so it's best to make sure you have the necessary paperwork before you begin the registration process.

Step 2: Complete the Application

Once you have proof of ownership, you'll need to complete the Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration. This form can be downloaded from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) website or obtained from a local DHSMV office.

The application will ask for your personal information, as well as details about your motorcycle, including the make, model, year, and VIN. You'll also need to provide information about any liens on the vehicle, such as a loan or lease.

Step 3: Pay the Fees

To register your motorcycle in Florida, you'll need to pay a few different fees. The exact amount you'll need to pay will depend on factors like the age of your motorcycle and whether you're also getting a title. Here are the fees you can expect to pay:

Title fee: $77.25

Registration fee: $10

License plate fee: $28 or $33 depending on the type of plate you choose

Sales tax: 6% of the purchase price or the fair market value of the motorcycle

Step 4: Obtain Insurance

In Florida, you're required to have insurance coverage for your motorcycle. The minimum requirements are $10,000 in personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 in property damage liability (PDL). You'll need to provide proof of insurance when you register your motorcycle.

Step 5: Submit Your Application

Once you have all the necessary paperwork and have paid the fees, you can submit your application to the DHSMV. You can do this in person at a local DHSMV office, or you can mail your application and payment to the DHSMV.

If everything is in order, you should receive your new title, registration, and license plate within a few weeks. Congratulations, you're now the proud owner of a registered and titled motorcycle in Florida!
